New Metallics Thread Information Page
|
On the Surface New Metallics is an exciting 2-ply strong, soft, flexible gimp thread that offers versatility for designs. New Metallics are available in 100 yard spools in a variety of colors. This thread is not like the YLI Fine Metallics. Fine Metallic threads are very thin and New Metallics are much thicker. New Metallics are supple and are easily shaped. When using thread from two spools, the thread is doubled and a very firm piece will evolve. New Metallics can be used for crochet including hairpin lace, knitting including I-cords and with beads added, weaving small fine pieces or sections, bobbin lace, cord making, netting, cross-stitch, hand embroidery, needlepoint, embroidery, cross-stitch, tassel making, tatting, braids, wrapping, knotting, macramé, knitting machines and some types of sewing machine stitching. The two thread ends tend to separate a little which is good when you want to use only one ply for fine projects. To keep the threads from separating at the ends, twist the thread counter clockwise (right-handed) or clockwise (left-handed) to keep the thread from separating from each other and the core while you work. If you are combining strands for cords or plying, you need to watch the twist. For crochet, knitting and other techniques, you do not need to continuously watch the twist as much. After a little experimentation, you will know if you need to twist the thread as you work and in which direction. New Metallics colors are gorgeous and make wonderful little projects. Use a medium twisted wire needle for stringing beads. Size 6/0 to 15/0 beads will easily fit over the 2-ply thread. More care is needed when using small cut beads as they can shred the fibers. If you are making a close fitting bracelet with the metallic threads only to roll over your hand repeatedly and rub your skin, you may wear the fibers. If you combine beads and they stick out from the fiber, that will protect the fibers. If you take two spools of thread of two different colors, you will have a nice variegated finish. You can add New Metallics to other yarns or threads for fancy finishes. On the Surface New Metallics are a nice addition to the thread world. I have made a variety of bead crochet and bead knitted items with this thread. I continue to experiment and make new creations with New Metallics and combine them with the Fine Metallics and other fibers. |
