Finca pearl cotton #5 is my latest thread addition. Presencia in Spain is the manufacturer of Finca cotton #5 thread. Finca thread is smoother, has a higher sheen and appears to be a tighter ply than other pearl cottons. All cotton fibers become softer as they are handled and washed. Since Finca is a tighter plied fiber, it will not stretch as much as other cotton #5 threads and holds its resilience longer. Finca feels good to the touch and does not separate when using a crochet hook or knitting needle. My Pearl Cotton #8 customers requested the #5 pearl cotton and I now wholesale and retail Finca Pearl Cotton #5. You can crochet and knit with 6/0 beads and Finca #5. For those who have a difficult time working with thinner threads, Finca #5 will get you going with beautiful bead crochet ropes that are popular now. The ropes should not have over 5 beads around in a rope to keep the bead weight from stretching the rope. Finca #5 is excellent for tapestry weaving (pin weaving), and the large choice of colors allow you to work color graduation in these woven pieces. Finca thread can be used for braids, knotting, macramé, needlepoint, embroidery and other stitchery techniques. For stitches requiring counted cloth, you need a soft counted cloth that has holes big enough to accept the thread. I tried Mesh Needlepoint Canvas #14 interlock S.T. and it worked great; however, the canvas was very stiff. It grabbed the thread on the needle at the edge of the canvas and shredded the fibers. For that reason, you need a softer canvas or cloth or cut the edges of the piece you are working neat so the thread does not grab the edge. The linen counted cloth is much better for pearl cottons and other soft fibers. Presencia has provided a conversion chart of Finca colors to DMC and Anchor. This way you can match up Finca colors with DMC or Anchor thread you already have or find an equivalent in Finca that you can no longer find in the other brands. Finding pearl cotton #5 and #8 in a full line of colors is almost impossible to find at your local shops. Unfortunately, many stores carrying pearl cotton threads went out of business or stopped carrying a full line of colors. There is nothing worse than beginning a project and not being able to finish because you can’t find a supplier. I carry the full line of Finca pearl cotton #5: 122 solid colors and 33 variegated colors. This full line of colors allows you to start a project with a darker color such as 3670, a dark teal, then change to variegated 9770 that includes the same teal color, then finish with a light color, 4048, which is a light soft green. These three colors match up beautifully. If you want help with a color combo, just email me. |
